Gomtipur corporator Iqbal Shaikh has claimed that 40% of the city’s population is not getting enough drinking water.

He alleged that though the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has promised to provide water twice a day during summer, many areas of the city are hard pressed to get it even once a day.

Taking part in the zero hour discussion at a meeting of the water supply committee, he said that areas like Naroda Road, New Naroda, Amraiwadi and Gomtipur are the worst hit.

He also said that even Madhupura, which is a former mayor’s ward, is not getting enough water these days.

Corporator of Sarkhej, Mirza Haji also came down heavily on AMC for its alleged inability to build a water tank at Bibi Talao area in Vatva.

He said that the civic body was not doing enough to build the tank even though land for it has already been allotted.

Haji also raised the issue of Rajpur ward corporator Kamarjaha Shaikh, who, he said, is not getting enough water at her Rakhial residence.

The Sarkhej corporator also demanded that the water tank at Indiranagar government colony in Lambha ward be repaired.

He said that this huge storage tank is full of water but due to technical glitches, it is not being pumped to households in the area.

The water supply committee proposed in the meeting to lay a sewerage pipeline from Paldi’s Shantinath society up to Sabarmati River.
