4 Bhavnagar police on trail of looters die in a mishap

The accident took place near Anand-Fatepur Crossroads near Tarapur between 2:00am and 2:30am on Thursday.

In a shocking turn to the an investigation in the Bhavnagar angadia loot case, four policemen on the trail of the heist's alleged mastermind Bhupat Ahir were killed, along with Ahir's teenager son, in a road accident  near Anand late on Wednesday night.

Bhavnagar police said that the four-member police team were on their way to Surat in search of Ahir, the main accused in the Rs1.10 crore diamond heist, when their car collided head-on with a truck coming from opposite direction.

The accident took place near Anand-Fatepur Crossroads near Tarapur between 2:00am and 2:30am on Thursday.

All members of the team- constable of Bhavnagar A- division police Samir Katharia, member of assistant superintendent of police squad, Hitubha Vaghela; member of LCB (local crime branch) Jayanti Chavda and A-division detection constable Aniruddhasinh Chudasama died on the spot. Ahir's son Chetan, whom the team had picked up form his grandmother's home in Dhola village of Umrala taluka in Bhavnagar district, was also killed. 

Learning about the accident, Tarapur sub-inspector SK Solnaki and Sojitra sub-inspector NK Gujjar rushed to the spot and shifted all the five to Tarapur-Anand referral hospital.

Sources in the Bhavnagar police said that Katharia, who was reportedly driving the car, had joined the police 10 years ago and his father is also a retired cop. Vaghela hailed from Amreli and was considered among the most enthusiastic persons in the department, whereas Chavda was also considered a promising cop who had earlier served in SOG (special operation group).

Chudasama had served as a cop for the last 25 years and had earned a name for himself by detecting several complex cases during his days with LCB and rapid response (RR) cell.

Chetan was a class XI student at a school in Bhavnagar city and had gone to his grandmother's village to spend the summer vacation.

Top officials of the Bhavnagar police also reached the spot of the incident and later, the bodies were handed over to the relatives the deceased.

Kheda police have registered a case of accidental deaths and
started further investigation.

Two employees of Bhavnagar-based Gujarat Angadia firm were shot at and looted of diamonds worth Rs1.10 crore by some unidentified persons on Tuesday morning.
