2G scam probe moved fast only after its intervention, says SC

The Supreme Court Wednesday said it was only after its intervention that the probe in 2G spectrum allocation scam started moving fast.

A bench of justices GS Singhvi and AK Ganguly said the bona fide of the petitioners, who moved the apex court seeking probe in the case, should not be questioned and some people need to be more vigilant in the society to approach the proper forum against irregularities.

"By means of these petitions, they have brought to notice of this court about the irregularities in 2G spectrum allocation. The petition filed resulted in the expediting of the investigation in the case. Things started moving fast and in a particular direction only after the petition was filed. At no stage the court's order put any hindrance in the probe. It only gave strength to CBI to probe into the case," the bench said.

"Some people need to be more vigilant and approach the proper forum against such irregularities. It gives confidence to the common people," the bench said.

The court made the remarks during the hearing of Janata Party President Subramanian Swamy's plea seeking a CBI probe against Home Minister P Chidambaram for his alleged culpability in 2G scam.

Swamy alleged Chidambaram as the then Finance Minister was a party to a conspiracy with former Telecom Minister A Raja in deciding the price for spectrum, which was contested by CBI and the Centre.
