1,000 doctors attend conference in Ahmedabad

    The annual conference of Gujarat State Branch of Indian Medical Association- GIMACON 2010, conducted by Ahmedabad Medical Association, concluded in the city on Sunday.

    More than 1,000 doctors were present in the conference. The two-day event was based on the theme 'Expanding horizons in medicine'. The event, which catered to all fraternities in the field of medicine, saw the presence of speakers, luminaries from various fields and a large number of guests.

    Dr Anant Joshi, senior orthopedic surgeon and eminent sports injury specialist from Mumbai, spoke on the recent emerging trends in the management of sports injury. Talking about getting the foreign help in therapies, Joshi said, "When technology is good and we can afford it, then why not get foreign expertise and use it for the betterment of our athletes."

    He added that earlier for injuries like tennis elbows, steroids were injected. But nowadays, for such injuries Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) is injected.

    "Significant advances have been made in the area of rehabilitation for sportsmen. New techniques like Hydrotherapy, Isokinetic machines etc, are being used."

    Talking about the new areas of injuries, Joshi said that a new concept 'Sports hernia' has come up, in the last few years. A renowned oncosurgeon, Dr Pankaj Chaturvedi, talked on how tobacco chewing has led to an increase in cancer in India.

    He spoke on new treatments available in the field. Internationally acclaimed doctor and CEO and director of Parkway healthcare and hospitals, MR Daniel Snyder, gave a lecture on medical tourism.
