The Delhi Traffic Police have come up with a plan to decongest the ISBT- Kashmere Gate corridor. The department has proposed construction of a bypass connecting Salim Garh to Wazirabad. Apart from this, they have also proposed shifting of buses from the ISBT terminal to Jahangirpuri and Anand Vihar bus terminal, since nearly 2,500 buses pass through or stop at ISBT.

Proposed by Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ajay Kashyap, the plan aims at decongesting not just the ISBT terminus but also other corridors in the national Capital. Over a lakh vehicles pass through the corridor daily.

The plan was made keeping in mind the high visibility and high traffic volume that passes through major corridors in the city. Under the plan, the traffic police aims at installing a signal at the Salim Garh Y point. The road connects to the ISBT terminus and further till Majnu ka Tilla.

The Hanuman temple, which is situated after the Y point, witnesses a lot of people coming to the temple on Tuesdays and Saturdays. The signal will not be functional all the time but, when there is heavy traffic on the road, it would be used to ease the movement. The department has also proposed extending the Salim Garh bypass directly to Wazirpur to shed the load from ISBT. This plan can only be implemented if the construction is carried out over the Yamuna plains.

The foot-over bridge, located at the ISBT terminus, is also a major cause of concern as people who use the bridge to come down to the footpath and then walk all the way to the bus terminal. The plan aims at extending the bridge to the bus terminal inside directly so that people can directly reach inside, instead of walking on the road.

As per traffic officials, the ISBT terminus has severe engineering flaws. The Salim Garh road is a six-lane road and the Ring Road has four lanes, but later the road gets narrower, resulting in heavy traffic.

The plan also involves diverting buses to various bus terminus. Bus routes of Uttarakhand (125 buses) via Shastri Park and Uttar Pradesh (355 buses via Shastri Park and 25 buses from Nanaksar, Wazirpur Bridge) can be diverted to Anand Vihar bus terminus, further reducing the load. On similar lines, interstate buses of Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, and Haryana, which enter from the Singhu border area, can be diverted to Jahangirpuri bus stand.

A total of 130 buses can be diverted there.
