Amidst protests from student unions and teachers’ associations, Subramanian Swamy spoke on the construction of Ram Temple at Ayodhya on Saturday.

Recalling the days of former PM Rajiv Gandhi, Swamy claimed that even Gandhi had been in favour of building a temple at Ayodhya. “Rajiv Gandhi had told me that Ram temple will be made in Ayodhya. He had said 'I will lend all possible support'. He allowed Ramayana to be telecast on TV, despite protest from his own party. He also gave permission for laying the foundation stone of the temple,” Swamy said.

Swamy, who has been constantly targeting Rajiv’s wife Sonia Gandhi, was quick to add, “Sometimes a good person can also have a bad wife.”

Swamy, who pursued the 2G spectrum case and the National Herald case, added, “I had said that D Raja will go to jail. I had also said that the Setu Samundran project will get cancelled. I have said something in the National Herald case, I know that too will happen,” he said. Swamy has been saying that both Sonia and Rahul Gandhi will be jailed for misappropriation of funds in the National Herald case.

Swamy was speaking at a two-day seminar on ‘Shri Ram Janam Bhoomi Temple: Emerging Scenario’ organised byArundhati Vashishtha Anusandhan Peeth
(AVAP) at Delhi University’s Arts faculty. AVAP is a research organisation founded by late VHP stalwart Ashok Singhal.

Swamy also added that the path of Ram temple, will lead to the revival and reconstruction of the Krishna temple at Mathura and Kashi Vishwanath at Banaras.

The BJP leader further claimed that Muslims call Lord Ram the Imam-e-Hind. He said that it is the Sunni Waqf Board that is delaying the temple construction process. “The mosque inside the temple premises is taken care off by the Shia Muslims, but the Sunni Waqf Board has moved courts. If the Muslims want a mosque, they can be given land somewhere else in Ayodhya,” he said. Indian Muslims should accept the fact that Ram temple will be made, he implied.

As Swamy was speaking inside the auditorium, left wing student groups protested outside. They alleged that seminars like the one being held were attempts by the BJP to saffronise education. Student from Delhi University and Jawaharlal Nehru University held protests outside the Arts faculty. “We oppose the ideology of the RSS and VHP. Seminars like these are attempts to distort the education system,” said Garima Sharma, a JNU student agitating against Swamy’s lecture.

The seminar also saw opposition from the Congress affiliated students' and teachers' bodies. Teachers under the aegis of Academics for Action and Development (AAD), protested Swami's talk on campus. "We are not against discussion and dialogues, but the seminar on Ram Janmabhoomi is being organised with the hidden agenda to divide society into mutually exclusive polarised groups," said AAD president Aditya Misra

Swamy, however, said such protests were real reflections of intolerance. “Those who use the word secular do not understand its meaning. Is this not intolerance towards an Indian thought? As long as they (the protestors) keep their protests peaceful, I don’t care,” he said.
