'Selfie Against Dowry' is Haryana's new initiative

After a successful 'Selfie With Daughter' initiative, Haryana's Bibipur village has launched a campaign to fight against dowry.

After receiving a lot of appreciation and a special mention from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the hashtag 'Selfie With Daughter', Haryana's Bibipur village has started another initiative, a leading daily reports. This time against the dowry system.

The aim of the campaign is to fight for women's rights and quash the practice of giving dowry. According to the report, the initiative is being called 'Selfie Against Dowry' wherein couples who stand up against the social evil or are against it can send their entries with the hashtag. The last date to send entries is August 20.    

As of now, the campaign has already received more than 180 entries, Bibipur sarpanch Sunil Jaglan said. "We are getting pictures from other states and other countries too," he told the daily. 

The campaign also received appreciation from Union Minister Maneka Gandhi on the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development Facebook page.

Many people in the state are happy that the initiative is being taken to fight the custom. Narender Kumar, an army man from Chimnawas village in Rewari who sent a selfie with his wife told the newspaper that there were regions in Haryana still where the practice of dowry still continued. "Such a campaign will encourage more people like me who do not believe in dowry," he said.
