Madhya Pradesh: More candidtes with criminal past now than in 2008

Analysis of 683 candidates reveals that 40% Congress candidates have cases registered against them

An analysis of 683 candidates has revealed that 206, or 30%, have criminal cases pending against them. At least 120 of these have cases of murder, kidnap and crimes against women lodged against them.
More than 2,500 candidates will contes the elections in Madhya Pradesh, to be held on November 25. The analysis of self sworn affidavits of candidates from Congress, BJP and BSP contesting in the upcoming assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh was done by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
The Indian National Congress fares the worst with 40% of its candidates (91 od 228) having cases against them. This is significantly higher than the 31% candidates with criminal records that the Congress had fielded for the 2008 Madhya Pradesh assembly elections.
According to ADR’s anaylsis, the BJP has 27% (61 of 229) candidates with criminal cases while the BSP’s record is at 24% (54 of 226) candidates with criminal cases against them.
In 2008, the BJP had 22% candidates with criminal cases while the BSP had 20% candidates with criminal cases against them.
