Sitting BJP MLA B N Vijay Kumar died of a massive heart attack at a hospital here in the early hours on Friday, the party said.

A candidate for the May 12 assembly polls, Vijay Kumar had collapsed during an election campaign in Jayanagar constituency in the city and was shifted to government-run Jayadeva Institute of Cardiology, where efforts to resuscitate him failed, state BJP join spokesman S Prakash told PTI.

Vijay Kumar, aged 59, was a two-time MLA from Jayanagar. He was a bachelor.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah offered his condolences to Kumar's family on Twitter. "I express my condolences to his family & loved ones. Shri Vijaya Kumar was a sincere & hard working political leaders. May his soul rest in peace,"  Siddaramaiah tweeted.

Ahead of the upcoming polls in Karnataka, both BJP and Congress have launched aggressive campaigns in the state.

While PM Narendra Modi attacked Congress for their 'disrespectful attitude to armed forces', the latter chose to call the prime minister 'desperate'.

On Thursday, PM Modi in Kalaburgi said: "Congress party's disrespectful attitude for our armed forces is well known. They called our Army Chief a 'Sadak ka goonda' right after surgical strikes, they have consistently shown their disdain for our brave heroes."

"Karnataka has a rich history of valour with immortal names like Field Marshall Cariappa and General Thimayya. But, how Congress governments treated them is well recorded in history. In 1948 after defeating Pakistan, General Thimayya was insulted by PM Nehru and then RM Krishna Menon," said PM Modi.

Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Thursday was also addressing a rally in Aurad town of Bidar district.

Gandhi blamed PM Modi for 'character assassination' and called him 'desperate'.

"PM Modi resorts to personal attacks and character assassination when he's desperate. I never resort to personal attacks. Instead, I ask questions. Questions PM Modi doesn't answer,"

The Congress chief also attacked the BJP over the multi-billion Nirav Modi scam. Gandhi said that, ‘while the poor people of the country stood in queues and went through troubles post demonetisation, the likes of ‘Chhota Modi’ looted people's money and escaped.’
