The motives behind the Sheena murder case might still be unclear, but now evidence is emerging that Indrani Mukerjea's alleged murder of her daughter might have been influenced by dirty money deals, which involved companies owned by Indrani and her third husband Peter Mukerjea.

Mumbai police sources have confirmed to dna that they are probing whether Sheena was unwillingly made the repository of a huge sum of money, most of which were proceeds from the Mukerjeas' sale of their stake in 9X Media Pvt Ltd, a news and entertainment company they founded in 2007.

The police suspect that Sheena's refusal to give back the money to Indrani unless she publicly accepted her as her daughter led to her gruesome murder on April 24, 2012. Sources reveal that the police will be probing if Indrani parked money with Sheena after the Serious Frauds Investigation Office (SFIO), under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, started probing massive financial fraud in the sale of English news channel NewsX, involving companies related to the Mukerjeas in 2011.

Documents accessed by dna also support the Mumbai police's initial line of investigation. Company documents reveal that the Mukerjeas were operating a host of companies which had fake addresses and no substantial financial transactions to show between 2007 till May 9, 2011, when both Peter and Indrani officially ended their association with 9XM Media Pvt Ltd.

Indrani and Peter had used four companies - Indrani Incon Pvt Ltd, IPM Incon Pvt Ltd, IM Media Pvt Ltd and INX Media Employee Trust - through which they owned a 50% stake in 9X Media Pvt Ltd. However, none of the four companies exist. The address mentioned by the Mukerjeas in their filings before the Registrar of Companies (RoC) was Block 16, Unit 15B, Phoenix Mills Compound, Lower Parel, Mumbai.

When dna visited the address, it turned out to be a dumping place for construction materials. None of the companies have employees or any substantial activity to show in their books.

dna tried to trace the Kolkata-based directors of two of the companies - IM Media Pvt Ltd and Indrani Incon Pvt Ltd. Till the time of going to the press, both of them could not be traced in Kolkata. Peter Mukerjea did not respond to calls and SMSes. The Mumbai police will be probing Indrani's modus operandi in parking the money with Sheena and the trigger that led the mother to allegedly murder her daughter.
