Blind faith on Internet search results seems to have caught up on the publishers of a Bengali textbook meant for Class 5, in which a chapter on running legend Milkha Singh carries a photo of Bollywood actor Farhan Akhtar.
The glaring error was pointed out by Akhtar, who essayed the role of the Olympian track athlete in 2013 biopic Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, leaving the West Bengal government red-faced.
“To the Minister of School Education, West Bengal. There is a glaring error with the image used in one of the school textbooks to depict Milkha Singh-ji. Could you please request the publisher to recall and replace this book? Sincerely. @derekobrienmp,” tweeted the actor, also tagging TMC Rajya Sabha member Derek O’ Brien.
The MP responded, “On it. Thanks for the feedback.”
With Akhtar’s tweet and a snap of the goof-up going viral, Education Minister Partha Chatterjee said that steps were being taken to “identify the error” and it would be rectified.
Ironically, the wrong photo has been carried in a chapter on current affairs.
Aveek Majumdar, chairman of the School Syllabus Committee, told DNA that the book is not among the 105 books recommended by them. “I have had a word with the principal secretary of the department and we will form a special investigation team.”
Majumdar said the episode appears to be politically orchestrated. “Had it been for rectification, the person would have tweeted the title page as well. I don’t blame Akhtar. He has retweeted the post because it was his picture which was misprinted. I might have done the same thing as well.”
The top official said there are thousands of publishers and books in Bengali are even printed in Tripura, Assam and some parts of Odisha. “This can well be a politically motivated post.”
