The odd even formula for cars in the capital is likely to be brought back around March end this year, following the city schools' board exams, a senior Delhi government official informed.

"Once the board exams are over, the odd even scheme will be brought back, so that students appearing for the exams are not inconvenienced," the official said, adding that adequate preparations will be made before that.

dna had earlier reported that the Delhi government is not likely to bring back the scheme in the next two months, as they wanted to avoid the exam period in the city, which is usually in February and March.

Speaking to the media, Delhi transport minister Gopal Rai said that public transport system will have to be bolstered sufficiently before a full-fledged scheme is implemented.

He indicated that two-wheelers are likely to be exempted again in the next phase of the scheme after March, since it wouldn't be possible for the government to procure an additional number of buses by then. "We had to discuss the option of exempting two-wheelers several times during the first phase of odd even scheme," said Rai.

However, according to Rai, 3,000 new buses will hit the city's roads by this November this year. Rai said that as per the plan, 1,000 buses to be run under cluster system will ply on roads from April-May while 1,000 air-conditioned low-floor buses will hit the streets from August. "Under 'Premium Bus Service', we will run 1,000 buses by the end of this year. These buses will have AC, water, magazine, marshals, wi-fi and other facilities," Rai said, adding that they will have higher fares, and will cater to the higher-income group class, most of whom use cars to go to office.

The Aam Aadmi Party government had implemented the pilot project on a trial basis from January 1-15 to curb rising air pollution levels in the city. While the project didn't reflect much on the air pollution figures, the traffic volume on the city's roads had reduced considerably during the fortnight of its implementation.
