Prime Minister Narendra Modi says he is pained over developments in Karnataka; says violence cannot resolve any problem.
A day after violence in Bengaluru over Cauvery water dispute, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed people form Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to be sensitive, saying he is personally pained by the developments.
One person was killed and another injured in police firing in Karnataka as the Cauvery water sharing row with Tamil Nadu turned violent on Monday, escalating tensions between the two states.
"Situation that has emerged in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, as a fallout of issue of distribution of waters of Cauvery River, is distressful. I am personally pained at the developments," said PM Modi in a series of tweets.
The Prime Minister further said that the violence cannot provide a solution to any problem, adding, "In a democracy, solutions are found through restraint and mutual dialogue. This dispute can only be solved within the legal ambit. Breaking the law is not a viable alternative."
"The violence and arson seen in the last two days is only causing loss to the poor, and to our nation’s property. Whenever the country has faced adverse circumstances, the people of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, just like people across the country have always handled the situation with sensitivity," Modi said.
Modi also appealed to the people of the two states, to display sensitivity, and also keep in mind their civic responsibilities. "I trust you will keep national interest and nation building above all else and give priority to restraint, harmony, and finding a solution, eschewing violence, destruction and arson," PM said.
Widespread violence erupted in Bangaluru and some other parts of Karnataka on Monday, while sporadic trouble was witnessed in Tamil Nadu following Supreme Court's modified order on sharing Cauvery water by the two riparian states.
