At least five people were killed and one were injured after suspected United Liberation Front of Assam-Independent (ULFA-I) opened fire at them in Assam’s Sadiya, which falls under the jurisdiction of Tinsukia district.

According to information, the six youngsters, who were sitting at a shop in the area, were targeted by the gunmen – all in camouflage attire. They were then taken to the banks of Brahmaputra river where they were told to sit in line and shot at.

Four have been confirmed dead, while two others are critical. They have been rushed to the nearest hospital. The army and the police have been rushed to the spot.

The deceased have been identified as Shyamlal Biswas, Ananta Biswas, Abhinash Biswas, Subal Biswas.

Sources have said that the victims are Bengalis and the ULFA-I action is retaliation to the rift between Bengalis and the Assamese people following the central government implementing NRC in the state.

Assam CM Sarbananda Sonowal condemned the attack and has asked ministers Keshab Mahanta & Tapan Gogoi, DGP Kuladhar Saikia & ADGP Mukesh Agarwalla to rush to the spot and take stock of the situation.

Terrible news coming out of Assam. We strongly condemn the brutal attack in Tinsukia and the killing of Shyamlal Biswas, Ananta Biswas, Abhinash Biswas, Subodh Das. Is this the outcome of recent NRC development ?

West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee has condemned the incident. "Terrible news coming out of Assam. We strongly condemn the brutal attack in Tinsukia and the killing of Shyamlal Biswas, Ananta Biswas, Abhinash Biswas, Subodh Das. Is this the outcome of recent NRC development.
