Karnataka high court on Friday directed the state government to submit a status report on the dengue fever epidemic in the state by Wednesday. It also asked the government to detail the steps that have been taken to control the fever.

A division bench headed by Chief Justice JS Khehar and Justice Manjula Chelur observed the dengue fever condition in Bangalore and the state was a very serious matter.

“It is a serious issue. What are you doing? If immediate medical attention is not given, people may die,” the bench observed while ordering issuance notices to state and central governments, health minister B Sriramulu, BBMP Commissioner, National Institute of Communicable Diseases, The Indian Medical Association, Karnataka Medical Council and the Bangalore Reporters Guild.

The division bench issued notices while listening to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by Chandrakala Manjunatha, a Bangalorean whose 17-year-old son Yeshwanth Kumar succumbed to dengue fever on July 31.

“The state, Centre and the BBMP are required to identify the outbreak of the epidemic of dengue in the state, and particularly in Bangalore. Instead of that they, including the minister, are virtually brushing aside the seriousness of the epidemic. The state government is required to treat the outbreak as an emergency and urgently take steps as prescribed in the WHO report of 1996.

They should ask all hospitals to report about the detected, treated and under treatment cases of dengue and also details about and deaths the discharged patients. The BBMP has to take steps under the Control of Mosquito Breeding and Eradication of Malaria and other Mosquito Borne Disease bye-laws 1997, the petitioner prayed.
