Fifteen tiny tots were injured, one seriously, when the parapet wall of a neighbouring under-construction house collapsed on their playschool at Bakshi Garden in Cottonpet on Monday afternoon.

Nine of the 15 children have been admitted to various hospitals, while one, Namratha, has been under intensive care with cervical injuries. The rest of the students were sent home after administering first aid. All of them were aged four and below.

The children were having lunch when the wall caved in and fell on them through the cement-sheet roof of the playschool around 12.15 pm. Workers at the construction site escaped unhurt.

People from the neighbourhood and parents, mostly daily wagers, rushed to the scene soon after the crash, and pulled out the children from the debris, and shifted them to various hospitals in autorickshaws.

Of the 15 injured, six students were rushed to Vani Vilas Hospital, two to Nimhans, and one to Srinivasa Hospital in Cottonpet. Six others were treated in a nearby private clinic.

Namratha (3), Abhishek (2.5), Jagadish (4), Rakesh (3), Ramya (4), and Sai Ram (3.5), were the students undergoing treatment in Vani Vilas.

Bhuvaneshwari (3.5) and Arvind  (3), have been admitted to Nimhans, while Padmini (3.5), was rushed to Srinivas Hospital.
“I was serving food to the children when the wall collapsed. It fell on the children all 15 were injured,” said M Selvi, caretaker, whose house doubled as the playschool for 20 children. Five students were not in the school when the wall collapsed. Selvi sustained minor injuries in the incident.

The collapsed wall was part of a two-storey building. Ramu T, the house owner, reportedly told the police that the building was being constructed with the fund provided by the BBMP.

The school runs as part of Community Own Centre project of Praja Pragnya, a non-governmental organisation.
Witnesses said building owner Ramu was at the site when the incident happened.

Ramu has been arrested, the police said. They blamed negligence of the building contractor, Shankar, for the incident.
