Elders of this temple-town have come down heavily on the ongoing feud between Sode Vadiraja Mutt and Puttige Mutt, two of the original Ashtamutts, and have termed it as not just unfortunate but fear it will send the wrong signals and tarnish the image of Udupi as the world centre of Dvaita philosophy.

The elders have reacted for keeping out the swamiji of Puttige Mutt from the Paryaya festivities by the Sode Vadiraja Mutt.

The Dvaita philosophy is not restricted to Udupi and Karnataka but over the years, the swamijis of Ashtamutts have travelled all over the country and spread the philosophy as taught by Madhvacharya.

“It was, in fact, one of the functions of the Udupi swamijis according to the original teaching of Madhvacharya. But in the modern age, the people of Brahmin community, Madhvas, in particular, have settled all over the world and even in coldest continents and  socio-politically volatile countries, where there were no spiritual leadership except for the Puttige Mutt swamiji Sugunendra Thirta, who chaired the meeting of the world spiritual leaders held in US,” said U Prahlad Rao, a Madhva Brahmin settled in Philadelphia, US.

“We have built a fine temple in New Jersey under the leadership of Sugunendra Thirta. He guided us to the Brahmakalasha . This temple has now been recognised by the US government as one of the important religious centres,” said Rao.

“The Ashtamutts have engaged in the feud among themselves for a long time, which has weakened our mutt sampradaya (tradition) considerably, and we are not prepared to allow individuals to further denigrate the image of this world,” said Prof Sripathy Thantri, a scholar and teacher.

The Brahmana Parishat has watched the developments in Udupi with exasperation and disgust. “It’s time we make way for some degree of liberalism in the Brahmin culture,” the leaders said.

“We cannot let our petty differences consume us, particularly when the government is waiting to take control of the administration of Krishna temple by superseding the authority of Ashtamutts,” said Prof Tantri.

“The swamijis had a difference. They do not accept the foreign tour as behaviour fit for swamijis of the Madhva sect. The ban could only be for performing poojas, participating in the
procession and durbar programme, but for all other social programmes he could be called without any reservation if the swamijis of other mutts have no objections. I cannot mediate in this case as I feel it might not yield the expected outcome,” said HH Vishvesha Thirta of Pejavar Mutt.
