Three women end lives to escape dowry harassment in Bangalore

Tara said she still loved her hubby in her death note, but accused him of demanding money.

Suspected harassment over dowry forced three women to commit suicide in the city in as many incidents.

Ramya, 20, of Harinagar, allegedly hanged herself in her bedroom. She got married to Shivakumar, a factory employee a year ago. He was arrested on a complaint by Ramya’s father, Puttegowda. He alleged that Shivakumar and his parents ill-treated Ramya, demanding more dowry.

In another incident, 22-year-old Tara was found hanging at her EWS Layout residence in Katriguppe on Thursday.

Tara’s father Vishakante Gowda accused her husband Shankar and his family of harassing the woman over dowry.

Police said Tara committed suicide on Wednesday night, but the incident was revealed only the next morning. In a death note, Tara accused Shankar, a car driver, of harassing her. She had also professed her love for her husband in the death note.

Pavitra, 26, allegedly committed suicide over dowry harassment in Subramanya Nagar.

Police said her husband Lokesh had been demanding for dowry, resulting in frequent quarrel between the couple. On Thursday around 11.30 am, she tried to hang herself in a room.

A neighbour saw her taking the extreme step, rushed her to a hospital, where she died in the evening. Lokesh has been arrested.
