On the occasion of the 54th anniversary of Kannada Rajyotsava, 54 titles for children in the language were released by Sapna Book House at Gandhi Bhavan. “Writing for children is a challenge. I am happy that so many illustrious authors have come forward to bring out children’s books this Rajyotsava Day,” said Sudha Murty, writer and chairperson, Infosys Foundation, who was present at the function to release the 54 books.

“It is like a stone thrown against a freshly painted wall; the stone is bound to leave a mark. It’s the same with a child’s mind, which is eager to soak in ideas and gain imagination,” said Murthy, adding that even though the books were meant for children, she was keen on reading them.

Poet GS Shivarudrappa and Justice Rama Jois, member of Rajya Sabha, were also present at the occasion. Rama Jois, whose book Bharatiya Samskrutika Moulyagalu was released too, said that it is the responsibility of parents to inculcate the reading habit in children. “Today’s youth are the future of the country. Reading will help them develop a well-rounded personality and pick up sterling values,” he said.

Sumatheendra Nadig, whose book Iruve Mattu Aane was released, said, “This is my third book for children. Kannada writing for children is also easier to relate to for the child, as the language is the one spoken at home. Even the concepts are local. Children’s writing in English, for that matter even nursery rhymes, use concepts and ideas that children in India might find quite alien.”

Author Sampatur Vishwanath said that children’s writing should not be moralising in tone. “The message should be conveyed in a subtle manner,” he said. “My books may be comic in tone, but actually the content is quite serious,” Vishwanath says, referring to his latest work that was released on Monday, Makkala Katha Kosha.

Fifty-four children from Arya Vidya Samsthe were given a book each at the occasion. Nitin Shah, managing director, Sapna Book House, the publisher of the books, said that he hoped the books would encourage youngsters to read.
