Karnataka’s first private university, Azim Premji University, is still functioning from a rented building at Hosur Road, which is against the norms.

The Azim Premji University, which is dedicated to teachers’ education in the state, has completed almost two years, but till today it is functioning from the campus of PES School of Engineering, Hosur Road.

As per the act framed for the university by the state higher education department, it is must for the university to have its own campus to function. The higher education department recently directed the university officials to shift to their own campus in a fee-regulatory committee meeting.

“We have informed them several times to shift to their own campus, but they are saying the process is going on and they will shift soon. The problem is, we have no powers to take any action against them, because after permitting and framing the act, they will report to University Grants Commission (UGC) directly,” said a senior official of the department.

This issue was discussed even in the recent meeting conducted about private universities at state higher education council. There, many academicians and department officials expressed their unhappiness towards Azim Premji University, which it is functioning from a rented building.

“It was a meeting to discuss about private universities and was chaired by higher education minister CT Ravi. There we have discussed about Azim Premji University running from a rented building, that too of another education institution, and suggested to think twice before providing private university status to any education institutions,” said DS Krishna, syndicate member of Bangalore university, who was invited to the meeting.

Nilanjan Choudry, head, communications at Azim Premji University, said, “Our campus construction is under process on about 100 acres on Sarjapur Road. As per my knowledge, it will take another two to three years to shift to that campus.”
The university is conducting teachers training and educating programmes—for which it was set up—from the 7th floor of the PES School of Engineering campus.
