How many commuters know the easy passage to Mission Road from Rajaram Mohan Roy Road through Sampangiramnagar (SR Nagar) 1st main? Only residents of the area, perhaps. The stretch, also known as Sri Ram Mandir Road, provides motorists a quick entry to Mission Road and then to KH Road.

The half-kilometre stretch from Double Road to the point where the flyover ends has two signals. BMTC buses and private vehicles from three directions clog the road. Students of St Joseph’s Arts and Science College who keep crossing the road to hop on to buses add to the congestion.

Vehicles from Rajaram Mohan Roy Road need to take a U-turn to enter this road to reach the Mission Road. From Mission Road, they take a left and then a right turn to KH Road.

Despite being a short cut to Mission Road, this 1.2km stretch is narrowed down by auto repair shops that protrude onto the road. There area also cars parked on either side. A temple too takes uproad space here. Garbage dumped along the compound wall of a small factory keep pedestrians away.

“Some of these cars parked here belong to people who visit hotels on Rajaram Mohan Roy Road or Mission Road. They conveniently park these vehicles on this small street to avoid parking fee at hotels,” said Ramesh Kumar, who runs a shop along the road.

But he did not object to the presence of auto mechanic shops as motorists who visit these shops bring business to him as well.
“This narrow stretch is a short cut. But who will take the U-turn and go through the road full of rotting garbage? I would rather struggle through the heavy traffic on Double Road for five minutes than drive through this passage,” said Vikas Randhawa, a biker stuck at the traffic signal near Langford Road.

“The 1st main of SR Nagar is amost a parallel road to this part of the Double Road where all vehicles jam in. The road space is misused by cars parked at ‘no parking’ zones and the protruding temple structure blocking half of the road,” said NA Khan, assistant traffic manager, BMTC.

If this road was maintained properly and private vehicles diverted here, traffic chaos on Double Road could be reduced. Buses would move faster, he said.
