It is not just the rides on the elevated expressway from Central Silk Board Junction to Electronics City that have become costlier from the midnight of June 30.

Starting the same time and date, the Navayuga Bengaluru Tollway Private Limited (the consortium which is maintaining the toll plazas till the facility is handed over to the National Highway Authority of India) has increased the user fee on Nelamangala expressway.

According to the revised rates, even though the regular trip rates for cars and jeeps have not gone up, monthly pass rates for these vehicles have been raised by ¤45.

“The revision of user fee is effective at all toll plaza locations for the use of access controlled highway (including elevated highway) of Bangalore-Nelamangala section of NH-4,” said an official from the NHAI.

The expressway was opened to public on October 12, 2010.
However, vehicle users on Nelamangala Road are angry over the fee hike.

“It has been just eight months since the expressway was opened to public. A hike like this is not a good move,” said a truck owner, who uses the stretch every day.

Charan Raj K, a car user who avails monthly pass facility on the expressway, said that if they had not hiked the daily trip toll fee for four wheelers, they should not hike the monthly pass fee also.  “In fact, there should be concession on monthly pass,” he said.

When questioned about the same, a NHAI official said that the consortium had not increased the toll rates on single trip/daily pass for four wheelers, as they wanted to encourage more of these owners to take the expressway.

“By next year, the user fee for four wheelers will also be hiked on single trip basis,” he said.

The expressway along Tumkur Road also has an elevated expressway corridor of 4.5 km, and the total stretch of tolled highway is 19.5 km. It is an access-controlled one between Bangalore and Nelamangala. Also, it is the second longest for the city after the Hosur Road expressway.

The expressway on Tumkur Road has reduced the travel time between city and Nelamangala to just 17 minutes, which is otherwise around an hour.
