Citing personal reasons, the chairman of Karnataka Slum Clearance Board chairman and BJP leader, J Narasimha Swamy has decided to quit the party and announced his decision to relinquish his post of member of legislative assembly from the Doddaballapur constituency.

He will tender his resignation after the chief minister returns from his tour of Bellary. Without disclosing any names, Swamy said that he was humiliated by his family members’ attitude.

However, Swamy’s father and former minister RL Jalappa denied the charge. “There is no connection between the decision of my son to quit the party and the family. It is his personal decision. We separated in 1978 and have been living separately.  I am not aware of other issues,” he said.

Close associates of Swamy said he was not happy in the party. “At the time of joining the BJP, he was promised of a berth in the ministry, but it was not fulfilled. He was only made the chairman of Slum Clearance Board. He has been thinking of quitting for the last several months. Now he has announced his decision to quit the BJP,” said an associate.

Swamy quit Congress and joined the BJP before the 2008 assembly elections.

Another reason that could have transpired Swamy to quit the party is the defeat of BJP candidate Hanumantharayappa in the Doddaballapur municipal elections on Thursday. At the instance of his father Jalappa, all the Congress members united and defeated the BJP candidate.

Another reason seen is the recent announcement made by chief minister BS Yeddyurappa which linked senior Congressman Jalappa to illegal mining in the state. At that time, Swamy did not make an attempt to clear the name of his father. This further aggravated the relationship between Swamy and Jalappa.

Later, the chief minister admitted the blunder by naming Jalappa and attributed the mistake to false information provided by officials.

“There were political differences between Jalappa and Narasimha Swamy. Now it has come out in open. When Swamy joined the BJP, being a senior Congressman Jalappa was upset. After that, he decided to keep himself away from active politics. Swamy was finding it difficult to sustain himself in politics by opposing his father,” said a close associate of Jalappa.

It is believed that efforts are on in the Congress to bring back all the leaders who have quit the party and joined BJP.
