The soaring temperature in the city delivered a fatal blow on Sunday, as three daily wagers, including a 14-year-old school dropout, sleeping outdoors to escape the heat, were mowed down by trucks in separate incidents.

In the first incident, two close friends, aged 23 and 24, were sleeping under a lorry when its driver moved the vehicle unaware of the men sleeping under it in Chikkajala around 2.45am. The men, both named Moinuddin, were caught under the wheels of the lorry.

Police said the men were staying at their workplace, Lakshmi Stones and Marbles in Vidyanagar. Their colleagues reportedly told the police that the men, natives of Gulbarga, have been working there for a year.

Lorry driver Gunaselvan, who surrendered soon after the mishap, told the police that he was unaware of their presence under the vehicle.

The victims’ colleagues took them to a city hospital, but their lives could not be saved. Their bodies were later handed over to their relatives after post-mortem examination at the Yelahanka Government Hospital.

In the second incident, Syed Shah Rukh, aged 14, was knocked down by a speeding lorry while the boy was crossing the Veerasagara Main Road near Doddabetta Nagara around 2.30am.

Shah Rukh, a daily wager after he had dropped out of school, was sleeping outside his house, police said, adding that he crossed the road to answer the call of the nature.

Police said the boy’s neighbour, identified as Syedullah, saw the accident and took the victim to a hospital, but his life could not be saved.

Shah Rukh was the fourth son of daily wage worker Syed Khalid’s eleven children.

The lorry driver abandoned his vehicle and fled the spot soon after the accident. The Yelahanka traffic police seized the lorry and were
investigating.

Bangalore recorded a maximum temperature of 35.4º Celsius and minimum of 24.2º Celsius on Sunday.

Though a spell of drizzle slightly cooled down the city, once known as Pensioners’ Paradise, the weathermen had said it was just a respite. The temperature was expected to touch 37 º Celsius this week.
