Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) on Wednesday said that by October-end, roads affected by the metro construction work would be cleared of all obstacles.

“By the end of October, we will complete all civic works so that commuters can have a smooth ride on the roads where Reach-1 work is taking place. New roads from Byappanahalli to MG Road will be ready by October 15,” BL Yeshwanth Chavan, spokesperson of BMRCL, said.

The BMRCL also announced that it had completed the construction of the first viaduct in Reach-1 (Byappanahalli to MG road). The complete walkway is also ready on this section through viaduct.

“The civil construction was taken up in April 2007 and the launching of segments began in December 2008. The segment launching on CMH Road was one of the most difficult tasks, because of restricted road width and also for having the highest piers in the corridor. As some agencies and experts expressed their inability to carry out segment launching work on this section, BMRCL rose to the task and completed the work on Wednesday,” Chavan told mediapersons.

“Rakes for the metro will be brought to Bangalore after which trials will be conducted by November 15. While 50 coaches will be used for phase-1, BMRCL plans to have 6-car rakes for Reach-1,” he said. “We have already completed track laying work for 3.2km out of the 12.8km stretch. About 25% of track laying work is completed and 65% work in Byappanahalli and Trinity Circle stations have been completed,” he added.

He also said that BMRCL is setting up a “fare fixation committee’ involving public representatives. He expressed confidence that by the end of December, the metro will be open for commercial use.

“When we started work on Reach-1, the most challenging task was shifting the utilities and managing the traffic movement. With careful planning, supervision and adequate safety measures, the segment launching on CMH Road started during February 2010 and completed today (Wednesday), which is about six months time. The average progress of launching was about five spans per month,” Hegga Reddy, chief engineer of Reach-1 said.
