Three days after a seven-year-old-boy was found dead in a pit dug for the installation of an elevator at an under-construction building in Tilaknagar, a probe team from the Karnataka Lokayukta on Wednesday visited the site for an on-the-spot inspection.

The visit followed the decision of the Lokayukta,  justice N Santosh Hegde, to register a suo motu case.

“Vigilance director (urban development) KL Anande Gowda and Lokayukta chief engineer BR Anilkumar and other members visited the spot and detected several irregularities at the site. Prima facie, the construction site appeared to be posing threats to pedestrians. In view of this, we will take action against officials concerned from the BBMP and the labour department. The officers have submitted a preliminary report on Wednesday and the probe will begin on Thursday,” sources told DNA.

Seven-year-old Subbu, son of an artificial bangle merchant, studying in Class II at a government school in Jayanagar, fell into the water-filled pit which had been dug to instal an elevator for the apartment.

Subbu went out to play cricket after a late lunch on Sunday afternoon, when he fell into the pit and died.

A missing complaint was registered with the Tilaknagar police the following day and the boy was later traced to the pit.

“The pit was filled with water due to continuous rains. Nobody had even bothered to take action or put a board alerting the passersby. This is a case of utter negligence by the builders, supervisors, and the corporation. It was clear that an an accident was waiting to happen, and the seven-year-old fell for it,” Justice Hegde had said on Tuesday.

Justice Hegde had said that all the departments concerned would be issued notices.
