A 30-year-old businessman, Ashok Kumar, died after he was allegedly stabbed 22 times by his business and live-in partner, Evelyn, due to dispute over property ownership. Evelyn first knocked him down with a flower vase in her apartment on Canara Bank Road at Konanakunte cross, off Kanakapura Road, before stabbing him, the police said.

On Wednesday night, Evelyn, 42, along with her relative, Reagan, and their friend Auto Mohan invited Ashok to her apartment saying they needed to discuss business matters with him. “It looks like Ashok Kumar was invited to Evelyn’s apartment to discuss matters on the property the two jointly owned. They also shared ownership over an apartment and another house in Tilaknagar,” BNS Reddy, deputy commissioner of police (south east division) said.

Both Kumar and Evelyn were jointly running chit funds in Jayanagar and had acquired properties in Tilaknagar. “Both were believed to be living together for the past 10 years. According to the complainant, Rakesh, Ashok’s brother, Ashok was one of Evelyn’s several live-in partners. But Evelyn denied this. She said Ashok was her second husband,” the officer said.

Kumar was legally married to Roopashree eight years ago. When she learnt about his alleged relationship with Evelyn, there was constant discord in the family.

Evelyn had demanded that all the properties she jointly owned with Ashok be transferred to her name, but Kumar refused. Investigations revealed that the dispute over ownership of property had resulted in the murder. Evelyn, meanwhile, had transferred the Tilaknagar property to her friend, Auto Mohan’s name, the police said.

The police said that both Evelyn and Reagan, natives of Coimbatore, were taken into custody. They are on the lookout for Auto Mohan, who is reportedly an accused in Kannada film producer Chidambara Shetty’s murder in 1997.
