Upscale spas and salons are going all out to pamper body and soul with spa parties that combine beauty treatments for men and women with regulation party frills like music, food and beverage of your choice.

Picture inviting a few of your closest friends for an evening of pampering — chit-chat, sip on some mocktails and munch on snacks, as a masseuse tends to every bodywork whim. “Kitty parties, outings to malls, movies and restaurants are overdone,” says Prarthana Pradutta, owner, Peaches Salon and Spa. For women only, Pradutta’s salon, organises spa parties where pampering is the sole focus.

Pradutta, a former air hostess who decided to enter the beauty business, had seen salons abroad host special spa parties. When she opened her own salon here on Ulsoor Road, she decided to incorporate this concept.

“For a working woman with a hectic schedule and little time to socialise, spa-arties offer a chilled-out venue for her to catch up with friends while she indulges in a relaxing spa treatment,” says Pradutta. At her spa parties, Pradutta finds, “groups of friends, sisters and even mothers and their daughters get together for a treat.” In fact, she has found office teams, too, head there to get some work done while they’re getting pampered.

At Peaches, mocktails of choice, food and desserts are passed around while the group gets their routine treatment or treats itself to an elaborate spa service.

The salon even customises a spa party for a group in case one wants to throw a bridal/baby shower, farewell party or even bring in a birthday.

“People book the whole salon for a few hours and we tailor our services as per their requirements,” she goes on, “Music of their choice plays in the background, food and beverages are served, as they indulge in their favourite spa treatment.”

Spa parties are not just a woman thing; a few unisex salons have found that men too  enjoy them just as much. Sammar, a fashion designer who shifted base to Bangalore some time ago, partnered with his cousin Aslamm to start a salon here. The duo decided to dedicate a whole floor for spa parties when they opened SammarAslamm, a boutique salon  spa, three months ago.

“Spa parties are fairly popular in Mumbai and they’re so much fun. So, I knew we needed to set some place aside for them at our salon.”

For a spa-arty, Sammar and Aslamm call in a DJ, serve food and drinks while their guests indulge in facials, manicures and pedicures, foot and head massages.

Spa-arties, according to Nasir Sayed, co-owner Zara’s Salon and Spa proposes a package — it lets you pamper yourself, yet hang out and spend time with friends. At Zara’s Salon and Spa, once the sun sets, the terrace transforms to a calming venue for a traditional Thai massage.

“Friends or couples can indulge in some soothing foot massage amidst a candle-lit open terrace, while some soft ambient music plays in the background,” says Sayed.

Sammar believes that a spa-arty is innovative and certainly better than mundane dinners and get-togethers.

“They provide a relaxed, do-your-own-thing atmosphere,”  says Sammar. And most importantly, he says, “while attending one, you can give your make-up a miss and not even worry about dressing up.”
