A woman police inspector and two constables were caught red-handed by the Lokayukta police, while she was taking a bribe from a jewellery shop-owner. The bribe was meant as a favour to drop charges against him.

Though shop-owner Vinod Kumar Jain was not involved in any criminal case, inspector Mary Shylaja from the City Railway police station allegedly threatened to ‘fix him’ if he did not give her the money, which forced him to approach the Lokayukta on January 20.

“The inspector came to his shop on January 19 and forced him to give 70 gm of gold and Rs50,000. Jain agreed. But he reported this to us,” lok ayukta police said. On January 20, he went again to the police station to strike a bargain with the inspector. He also managed to record the conversation that took place between him and the inspector. After almost one-and-a-half hours, she reduced the bribe amount to Rs40,000. Promising to pay her, Jain went back to the shop.

On Friday evening, she sent two constables, Nagaraj and Mari Gowda, to collect the money. While taking the money, the Lokayukta police caught them red-handed. Inspector Mary was also later picked up from the police station. They were remanded to judicial custody.
