Ashalata Shetty is a financial analyst working with IBM. For the last four years, she has dedicated her weekends to an NGO, where she used to spend quality time with visually challenged students. And now, as a volunteer leader and a member of iVolunteer — an organisation that extends the platform for voluntary services to city-based NGOs, Shetty’s responsibilities have heightened.

Volunteer leaders of iVolunteer do not just provide their time and service to different NGOs, but also plan new ways and means of generating more volunteers and networking with more organisations.

“Earlier I used to stay in JP Nagar and knew several orphanages and old-age homes in south Bangalore. However, recently, post-marriage, I have shifted to Hebbal. Since iVolunteer doesn’t have many NGOs from north Bangalore within its network, my primary focus is to network with the NGOs here,” she said. She has already teamed up with three more volunteers from north Bangalore to hunt for NGOs.

“Apart from getting more volunteers involved in this project and networking with other NGOs, I also try to raise funds for iVolunteer through my office,” said Shetty. Neither her busy job profile nor her newly-married life has cowed down her spirit to volunteer for NGOs.

Shylaja Varma is another such example of indomitable spirit. A special educator herself, she runs an integrated pre-school. And now as a volunteer leader, she has her goals set. “I am trying to create awareness about the NGOs and also generate awareness on volunteering opportunities. My focus is to get volunteers from communities like teachers, doctors, homemakers and students,” she said.

Her focus is to spread the wings of iVolunteer to Malleswaram, Sadashivanagar, Rajajinagar and Hebbal. “I would like to work in different areas like civic issues, disability, environment, human rights, community development, child welfare and welfare of the elderly,” said Varma.

“I have been assigned HAL area which is closer to where I live. I plan to prepare a list of NGOs in this area, do a basic check on the Internet on their activities and affiliations, and then contact them over phone, fix up a time and meet in person to check their eligibility. In case of difficulty in time schedule and language constraints, we can always fall back to the iVolunteer full timers,” Pankaj Dixit, a private company employee said.

Pankaj is all set to expand the NGO networking of iVolunteer. “If I can add at least five more NGOs, I will be happy. I already have some volunteers who are interested to join. Once we identify the NGOs, we can ask them to give their time,” he said.

“With this extended help from 20 volunteer leaders’, iVolunteer will have a stronger network with NGOs in the city. Our volunteers will also get more options to work with and help more NGOs with their activities. Moreover, our leaders will also help organising theme based events every month on social development causes,” said Prarthana Unkalkar, head, iVolunteer centres.
