The victim, Teju Murthy, was cleaning the well of the lift when the lift operator, Ravi Kumar, who was not aware of Murthy’s presence, operated the lift.
Sheer negligence of the management of a building brought a tragic end to the life of a 20-year-old employee of a house keeping agency who was crushed to death under the lift in the six-storeyed building next to the Forum Mall in Adugodi on Monday morning.
The incident took place at the supermarket Star Bazaar located at HM Vibha Towers on Adugodi.
The victim, Teju Murthy, was cleaning the well of the lift when the lift operator, Ravi Kumar, who was not aware of Murthy’s presence, operated the lift, descending from the top floor to the ground floor, crushing him under its weight.
“Murthy was not informed that the lift would be operated. The housekeeper should have been warned about it. The accident happened due to the management’s negligence,” said M Chandrasekhar, a witness.
Another witness, Krishna Prasad MS, said that the police had asked the management of the building, to move out of the building as soon as they had arrived.
“I don’t know why the police did this. I thought the police was trying to help those people who are to be blamed to escape arrest. Now the police claim that these people are missing,” he said.
As most of the police officers were on special duty at the Vidhana Soudha, it was a while before the police officers arrived at the building. The body was then extricated from the well of the lift shaft.
The local police claimed to have booked cases of negligence
against the lift operator, the building manager and the housekeeping supervisor of Star Bazaar.
“The accused are yet to be traced. They had already escaped by the time police personnel reached the building. We have launched a manhunt for the accused persons. We will catch them at any cost,” said inspector Sivashankar Reddy. The victim was a resident of Tavarakare and a native of Devanur in Kadur Taluk, Chickmagalur.
