Goldsmith attacked, jewellery stolen in Bangalore

A series of chain-snatching events have been reported in the recent past, even as the price of gold climbs higher and higher. On Wednesday, a 31-year-old goldsmith was attacked with lethal weapons by three unidentified assailants.

The victim, Rajesh, a resident on RV Road, runs a shop on the first floor of a building near Lalbagh West Gate. The ground floor of the building houses a bar and restaurant.

Rajesh left for home from his shop around 9.30 pm. The bike-borne miscreants assaulted him as soon as he reached the road. He was attacked with  machetes.

The assailants left the weapons at the spot before fleeing with a bag containing gold jewellery.

Passers-by rushed Rajesh to the nearby Bangalore Hospital where his condition is reported to be serious.

The exact value of the jewellery was not known as Rajesh was reported to be in a serious condition, unable to speak.

Joint commissioner of police (crime) Alok Kumar said that a special team has been formed to nab the culprits. Police at all check-points have been alerted, he said.

A case has been registered in Basavanagudi police station. Investigation is on.

On April 8, two bike-borne miscreants robbed a goldsmith of gold articles weighing about 2 kg under Srirampura police station limits. The miscreants rammed their bike into the scooter of Ramesh Pandya.

The goldsmith fell on the road and the two men attacked him and snatched the leather bag containing gold jewellery. On May 1, burglars struck a goldsmith’s house in Cubbonpet and fled with gold ornaments and cash worth Rs10 lakh.

Goldsmith Nataraj Achari had gone out with his family members when the incident took place in Anjaneya Temple Street in Cubbonpet.

On June 24, burglars gained entry to Pooja Jewellers by drilling its roof and made away with gold and silver items worth about Rs30 lakh in Bazaar Street, Ulsoor.

Earlier this month, an employee of Abhushan jewellery shop in Jayanagar absconded after stealing diamond ornaments worth over Rs1 crore from the store.

Sonal Khatri fled to Bellary from where he was taking a bus to Mumbai. Sensing police scrutiny he left the stolen items in the bus.

He was arrested from Jaipur on Monday, three days after committing the crime.
