The BBMP Animal Husbandry Department started the mobile Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme at Rajarajeshwari slum at Shakambari Nagar ward. Ward corporator B Somashekar inaugurated the programme on Thursday.

According to the BBMP animal husbandry joint director Dr Parvez Ahmad Piran, the ABC programme was taken to curb breeding of stray dogs in slums, as slum people find it tough to offer anti-rabies vaccination for their dogs.

The programme began in the morning, and about 28 canines were vaccinated. Dr Piran said that they have set a target of 20 to 25 dogs that need to be vaccinated everyday. This was taken up along with the regular ABC programme in the city. According to the survey, Bangalore has 569 slums. The mobile ABC will be taken up in all slums. The doctors will also provide awareness to slum people on the ABC programme and its benefits.
