The decomposed body of a 21-year-old BSc student was found at her sister-in-law’s house in Jeevanbhima Nagar.

Police were suspecting that B Lakhsmi died on Saturday. The exact cause of her death was not immediately known.

Her husband, Dr Devaraj, 30, has been missing since Saturday.

The couple got married in November, 2009. The house had been found locked since Saturday.

The incident came to light on Monday evening after Dr Devaraj’s sister Shwetha and her husband Shashidhar returned home from their native place, Mysore. They noticed a foul smell emanating from the house, and on searching, found Lakshmi’s body.

Police shifted Lakshmi’s body to the Bowring Hospital and informed her relatives. Her father Beerappa Swamy, mother Radhamani, brothers Bhanu Prakash and Chandru reached the city late in the night.

Beerappa, a temple priest in Mysore, later lodged a complaint of dowry harassment and murder with the Jeevanbhima Nagar police. Police registered a case against Dr Devaraj, his mother Hema, sister Shwetha and relatives Javarappa and Sharadamma Javarappa. No arrests have been made.

The deceased’s brother Bhanu Prakash accused Devaraj of killing the woman. Speaking to this correspondent, he said Dr Devaraj had earlier attempted to smother her while the couple was on a visit to Ooty a month ago. She, however, escaped the bid.

Lakshmi reportedly told her mother that Dr Devaraj had attempted to smother her with a pillow. Later he apologised for his action, Prakash said.

Lakshmi had been staying with Hema in Mysore, while Dr Devaraj was living at Malleshpalaya. He was a dermatologist at a skin care clinic on MG Road.

Preliminary investigation revealed that Lakshmi went to her parents’ house at Rajendra Nagar in Mysore on Saturday, before leaving for Bangalore. Dr Devaraj, and his relatives, Javarappa and Sharadamma Javarappa, took her to the city from Mysore to attend the naming ceremony of a friend’s child.

Lakshmi’s relatives reportedly told the police that she was reluctant to visit Bangalore. She had called her father on Saturday evening, and reportedly told him that she needed to discuss something with him. Beerappa asked her to wait till she returned to Mysore.

Prakash said his parents had promised Dr Devaraj a house in Mysore as dowry. Dr Devaraj, he alleged, forced Lakshmi get the house registered in his name.

Lakshmi’s body was handed over to her parents after an autopsy, police said. Her internal organs were sent to the FSL for further investigation.
