It was an occasion to celebrate the cerebral. Hundreds of schoolchildren who were there to showcase their mathematical skills were glad that they had got a chance to do so in front of someone whom they idolised. And as the event unfolded, it was the turn of their icon, Infosys chief mentor NR Narayana Murthy, too, to admit that the occasion was unprecedented.

“This is wonderful. I am tongue-tied and almost zapped. I am highly astonished and immensely pleased to see so many child prodigies here,” Murthy said, after six-year-old Niharika Ramesh solved huge mathematical problems in matter of few seconds. “I am thrilled. Several hundred children from across Karnataka participated at day-long Brainobrain fest 2010, organised by Brainobrain Kids Academy Private Limited. The children are part of the Academy, where they are undergoing the Abacus skill development course to develop quick and effective was of solving mathematical problems.

The entire course is divided into 10 parts to help children develop memory, visualisation, concentration, listening skills, learning ability, creativity, self confidence, speed and accuracy to develop mathematical skills.

Murthy arrived to a rock star’s welcome later in the evening. The children cheered their idol as he entered the auditorium. When asked to the children how many of them wanted to be like Narayana Murthy, almost all children raised their hands.

Dipti RN, a student of class VI at Bhoomi Public School, Hubli, astonished everyone as she correctly answered mathematical problems, while dancing and singing a Bollywood song number. “I love to dance and sing and do I love to solve mathematical problems. I have thoroughly enjoyed my performance today,” said an elated Dipti, after being cheered by all.

“Narayana Murthy has always nurtured big dreams and worked hard towards them. He represents India at the global level. We here also teach students to aspire for greater heights in their studies and career and work towards them,” said academy president G Subramanian.

“Today, the children demonstrated what seems almost impossible for us. The Academy has trained almost 50,000 children across India. If another 50 million children in India develop these mathematical skills, then India would become a great nation,” Murthy said.

The children gifted their idol a potted plant.
