A gang of professional robbers looted a jewellery shop late on Sunday night in Garudacharpalya and decamped with valuables worth Rs5 lakh. The modus operandi of the gang was interesting — instead of breaking open the doors, it dug up a 14-foot tunnel from a nearby drain to make their entry into the shop.
Police said that the incident took place in Bhavani Jewellers and Bankers and came to light on Monday morning when the owner Daduram, opened the shop for business.
On entering the shop, to his shock, he saw a dug-up pit and also found some silver articles and gold jewellery missing. Daduram immediately informed the police. Mahadevapur police rushed to the spot and inspected the scene. A dog squad and fingerprint experts were pressed into service too.
Police said that the culprits entered into shop from the dug-up tunnel and decamped with the jewellery. They also found that the CCTV camera, installed in the shop was switched off by Daduram himself before he closed shop the previous day.
The police suspect that the gang had been planning to loot the shop for the past five days. “This job has been executed only after thorough preparation. It was not an insiders’ job and was done by professionals only. We suspect that the gang which looted SB Jewellers in Vidyaranyapura in June, 2009 and then another jewellery shop at Ramamurthy Nagar could be behind this incident,” an officer said.
A case was registered. Police said that 10 kg of silver articles and gold jewellery worth more than Rs5 lakh was looted from the shop.
The Vidyaranyapura police are yet to crackdown on the culprits in the 2009 SB Jewellers burglary. Now, the police say that the same gang from Andhra Pradesh, which was suspected of its involvement in the earlier burglaries, might have committed this crime as well.
