Bumpy road to splitsville leads to attempted suicide in Bangalore

A case of rift in love ended in a suicide attempt in Laggere on Monday.

M Naveen, 27, a resident of Laggere, and G Ramya, 25, a resident of Kempegowda Layout, Laggere, met while studying in a diploma college. Naveen was two years her senior. Love bloomed and the courtship continued for eight years.

Despite opposition from parents, the couple got the approval for marriage six months ago. Things were rosy until two months ago when differences cropped up between the two families, and also between Naveen and Ramya.

Naveen’s relatives and friends poisoned his mind about Ramya, stating that she was dating others too, according to the police. The situation took an ugly turn when Naveen told Ramya that he would not marry her.  Later, Naveen’s parents began demanding dowry before the marriage. When the girl’s parents refused to give dowry, Naveen told Ramya that his parents were seeking brides from families that were ready to pay dowry.

These developments left Ramya distraught. Common friends of Naveen and Ramya played peacemakers. Ramya was suggested to stay in Naveen’s house. She had had been staying there for the past three days.

The couple was set to head to Rajgopalnagar police station to sort out differences when Naveen consumed pesticide in his house on Monday. On seeing Naveen, Ramya fainted.

Ramya and Naveen’s parents were in the house when he consumed pesticide. Ramya’s father Gangadhar and Naveen’s father Manjunatha Rao also fainted and all the four were rushed to Lifeline Hospital in Laggere.

Ramya’s blood pressure and sugar level went down, said the police. Naveen and Ramya are undergoing treatment, while their respective fathers have been treated in the out-patient department, added the police.

No complaint has been registered. The police said they will register a case once Naveen regains consciousness. Naveen works as a helper in a private company, while Ramya is unemployed. The police have seized love letters the two exchanged.
