An 18-year-old college student was killed on Wednesday when a Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) bus ran over her near the Vijayanagar bus stand.

Soumya B, a resident of Mudalapalya near Manasagangotri School, was a first-year BBM student of the Bharatiya Samskruthi Vidyapeeth Arts and Commerce College.

She was on her way to the college and was crossing the service road of the bus stand, when the bus (KA 01 F 3264) on route number 176, from Kavalbyrasandra to RPC Layout, entered the road and hit her, just 50 metres away from the college.

Local shopkeepers who witnessed the incident said the bus was not supposed to take the service road. The driver deviated from the scheduled path and hit Soumya, who had almost crossed the road and was about to get on to a platform.

Soumya fell down after the bus hit her right shoulder. But the driver did not notice it and ran the bus over her, the witnesses said.  The front wheel of the bus ran over her waist and hip. She was dragged along by the bus, which stopped 10 metres away from the accident spot, Ramesh, a witness, said. Soumya’s abdomen ruptured. She was rushed to the nearby Gayatri Hospital. She underwent treatment for more than two hours, but the doctors could not save her.

The police said the driver, Anand Krishna, 42, was responsible for the accident. He should not have taken the service road. Krishan was arrested and produced before a court after a complaint was lodged by the college’s attender Girish. Girish, 29, said he and a friend of his were having coffee at the Shanti Sagar Hotel near the bus stand when the accident happened. He informed the police about the mishap.

Soumya was the second daughter of Basavarajaiah and Shashikala. Her elder sister, Bhavya, is married, and younger sister Bindu is a class X student. Basavarajaiah, a head constable, is posted as an escort for Karnataka governor HR Bhardwaj. The family hails from Solur in Magadi taluk of Ramanagaram district.

“On Wednesday morning, she left home for college around 8.10am without having breakfast,” Shashikala said. “She had an important class and she did not want to miss it. Before leaving home, she had asked me to prepare something special in the afternoon since it was Shri Krishna Janmastami day. We never thought she would return home dead,” said Shashikala.
