Get things done, by hook or crook: this seems to be the motto of Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP). The Palike, which faced residents’ ire and had to abandon the auctioning of trees along the Sankey Road stretch on Wednesday, pulled a fast one on the residents when it auctioned the trees on Wednesday evening itself.

The residents of Sankey Road were in for a shock on Thursday morning when they learnt that the BBMP had finished the auctioning of 19 trees marked for widening of the Sankey Road.

“We were present at the worksite till evening on Wednesday and ensured that no tree on the stretch was auctioned. However, Deputy Mayor S Harish said that the auction was over on Wednesday itself,” said environmentalist Vinay Srinivas.

Sources in BBMP told DNA that the BBMP officials, fearing disruptions, finished the auction process in the evening itself and the papers were signed around 7 pm at the BBMP head office on Wednesday.

However, deputy mayor S Harish was not ready to buy the argument. “We have finished auctioning of trees on Sankey Road as per the rules,” he said. When questioned as to why the Palike was in such a hurry, Harish said that though there had been opposition in the morning, by evening, according to Harish, there was ‘support’ from many residents.

Speaking to DNA, the BBMP deputy conservator of forest (south division) Puttaswamy said the auctioning took place around 5 pm on Wednesday and the 19 trees were auctioned for Rs1,22,000.
But Malleswaram residents’ welfare association member Dr Meenakshi Bharat said whatever the Palike had done was against the law. “The Palike has cheated us; we have lost the battle for Sankey Road,” she said.
