Bangalore may soon become the hub of research and innovation in India. Speaking at the Victoria, Australia-India symposium on research and technology on Thursday, MN Vidyashankar, principal secretary for IT, BT and S&T announced that plans are under way to create a research umbrella organisation that will bring together all the research and development labs in the city.

“We will be replicating the model of Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI), Taiwan, in the city. ITRI is where the iPad and the iPhone were made. It is home to all big innovation and it was started only in 1973,” he said adding that work on it will likely begin in four to five months. The umbrella organisation will be set up with consultation from administration from ITRI.

“This is a way to promote synergy between research and industry. This will be an institutional framework. There are 395 research labs in the city, so this organisation will work with all of them. In case someone wants to make a new kind of phone, then they will approach this organisation and they will give the project to one of the research organisations, who will then make a prototype. Based on that the product will be developed,” he said.

The budget will be fixed only after consultation with ITRI.

“The report will be drafted and submitted to the government on February 28 and once it gets approval, we will call people from ITRI to the city,” he said.

Oz-India bond strengthened

The minister for innovation, services and small business, Victoria, Louise Asher announced three new partnerships between Deakin University and Indian organisations. She also said that life sciences sector offers opportunities for new education and research partnerships between India and Victoria.

Three MoUs were signed between Deakin University and Bharat Forge, Indian Oil Corporation and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc).
