This World Mental Health Day, Bangaloreans have a lot to celebrate. MLA Nandish Reddy announced that Bangalore North may soon have a Nimhans centre, spread over 50 acres, near Hennur.

The announcement came in the wake of Mental Health Day celebrations at Nimhans.

A special request made by director Dr P Sathish Chandra to enable a shuttle system between various hospitals around Nimhans was also met with a positive response from the minister for urban development, Suresh Kumar. He said he would try to make this happen by November 1.

“The shuttle system will be of great help for patients who are often referred to other hospitals such as Jayadeva, Kidwai, Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, and so on. For them, travelling poses a major problem. A shuttle system of Volvo buses to these hospitals will be of immense help,” said Chandra.

Minister for medical education, SA Ramdas, was surprised at the statistics shown by Chandra that at least 36 lakh people in Karnataka need immediate hospitalisation for psychiatric care.

“We need to take mental health much more seriously and address the issue at home itself. Instead of focusing on treatment of mental disorders, we need to take preventive steps. What we need today is an emphasis on health rather than cure,” he said.

“This can only be done by creating more awareness on mental health issues,” he added. The urban development minister reiterated that an investment in prevention, precaution and promotion of knowledge on mental health issues is extremely important to counter the stigma related to mental health in the country.”

He added that efforts need to be made to educate the people against the stigma associated with mental health problems.

“Because of the stigma associated with mental health problems, there is a delay in the treatment of mental health issues. But the fact is, the earlier the investment, the more effective will be the treatment. Delaying treatment because of stigma and awareness will only aggravate the problem,” he said.
