Underage traffic violators will not get away by paying a paltry fine from now on. Instead, they will be directed to inform their parents, who in turn, will have to visit the police station along with the child and meet the inspector before the vehicle is released.
Frazer Town traffic police inspector RI Khasim said: “This initiative is to drill in some sense into young and negligent riders, especially those who are under 18 years and do not have a licence. There is no point collecting a fine from youngsters as they violate the rules again. After all, it’s the parents’ money they use to pay the fine”.
Underage riders make up for the biggest portion of traffic rules violators. In the past two months, Frazer Town traffic police have seized 50 vehicles and promptly called the violators’ parents.
Khasim said: “When we began this initiative, we came across a few cases where the parents said their child did not have a bike and it was a friend’s vehicle. We inform parents about the violation and then leave it for them to decide the fine or not. In cases where parents have bought a vehicle for their children, they pay the fine.”
When this initiative was brought to the notice of police commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji, he directed all traffic police stations to adopt it. Frazer Town police have also attended a few parent-teacher meetings in nearby schools to inform them about the initiative.
Prosecute the owner is the thumb-rule being implemented by the traffic police lately. Since the fine levied is a paltry Rs1,000, this initiative will hopefully deliver rich dividends. Parents’ response has been fantastic and they appreciate the initiative and nobody has complained, said Khasim.
