Twenty-two students of Mirambika Primary School in Naranpura approached the education authorities after they were handed school leaving certificates on Wednesday.

The students were in for a huge shock when the school authorities handed them the LCs out of the blue.

While the school wrote in the LCs that the students were being relieved since they had completed primary education, Naresh Shah, president of All Gujarat Parents Association, alleged that the students were discriminated against because they were from financially weaker background.

"Mirambika is a granted school, and the fee goes up after Class 9. This is the reason the students were asked to leave. Some of these students also belong to Scheduled Castes and other backward castes," Shah alleged.

Ahmedabad DEO (City) Navneet Mehta, whom the students complained to, said that it was likely the students were asked to leave because of weak academic performance.

"I don't think it could be because of any other reason, but we will conduct a probe and find out," Mehta said.
