For the first time, at least 150 students from the city passed the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) joint entrance examination (IIT-JEE), the results of which were declared on Wednesday. Soham Phade of the M Prakash Academy, a city-based IIT coaching centre, topped the city with an impressive all-India rank (AIR) of 65.

About 4.85 lakh candidates had appeared in the IIT-JEE 2011 held on April 10, out of which over 5,000 were from the city. There are 9,618 seats in the 15 IITs and about 10,000 ranks were declared on Wednesday.

Parth Bhattacharya of the IITian’s Prashikshan Kendra stood second in the city with an AIR of 196, while the third spot was taken by Chinmay Kulkarni
of the M Prakash Academy (AIR 208).

Speaking to DNA, Lalit Kumar, joint director of Prime Academy, another city-based IIT coaching institute said, “Fifty-one students from our institute cleared the examinations, with 15 students in the top 1,000 rank.’’ Kumar claimed that this was the highest number of candidates clearing the examination from one institute in Pune till date.

M Prakash of M Prakash Academy told DNA, “Forty-five students of the 83 who had enrolled with us passed the test in their first attempt. We are very happy with the results.’’

According to Durgesh Mangeshkar of IITian’s Prashikshan Kendra, this year’s cut-off for the examination was the highest in 50 years. “One reason being that the paper was comparatively easy and 12 marks were granted to every student in compensation for the wrong questions,’’ he said.

Mangeshkar said the model answer sheets were declared by the IIT-JEE authorities, which helped students gauge their performance. “This has brought transparency in the system,’’ Mangeshkar said.

Another feature of the 2011 results was the increased number of girls in the list of successful students. “Four of our girl students have passed the IIT-JEE this year, with Vishakha Gupta securing an AIR of 6,034. She has achieved a rare feat by
securing a 96.6% in the CBSE board examinations also,’’ said Mangeshkar.
