Bracing themselves for elections, Shiv Sena has appointed veteran Vashi corporator Vitthal More as the incharge (sampark pramukh) for Belapur assembly seat. The move, according to political observers, is an attempt to counter Thane guardian minister Ganesh Naik who was elected from this segment during the 2009 elections.

More said, “My primary responsibility will be to strengthen party base in this segment by working with office bearers of the party and coordinating with Shiv Sena Bhavan and informing them of all the latest political developments in this seat.”

Asked about challenges he has to tackle, More said, “There are several discrepancies in the electoral list. Several people have left the city, yet their names continue to be included in the list.

We suspect it could lead to electoral malpractices. So we will be taking up this work along with booth level assistants. We will also try to rope in people from all castes and communities into the party.”

More said, “I have been a corporator with Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) for the last 18 years and well aware of the problems of the satellite city. My main priority will be to make Shiv Sena a strong force in this belt.”

When asked if he plans to contest against guardian minister Naik from this seat, More said, “It is too early to say this. It is for the party leadership to take a decision in this matter.”

More, a Shiv Sainik had joined NCP ahead of municipal corporation elections in 2010. Later in September 2012 he parted ways with NCP to join Sena again alleging that NCP was gagging the voice of opposition corporators over various issues. More was the leader of the house when he quit the party.

According to political observers, More, who had retained his ward No54 seat against NCP candidate Vijaya Thakur during bypolls held after he shifted to Sena, could be Sena’s choice in this seat to counter Naik.
