In a tragic incident, Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Nash and his wife Alicia were killed in a car accident on Saturday. Huffington Post confirmed the news citing sources from New Jersey State Police.

The scholar, known for his pioneer work in the field of game theory, differential geometry, and partial differential equations, was 86 years old. He was associated with Princeton University. The couple lived on campus.

NJ.com has reported that the couple were most probably not wearing seatbelts when the fatal crash happened.

Academy Award winning film A Beautiful Mind depicted the life of the mathematician, where Russell Crowe portrayed Nash. It showcased Nash's stellar work in the field of Game Theory and also his struggle with mental illness.

The driver of the taxi in which the couple were travelling lost control, crashing into a guard rail.

The Nash and his wife were ejected from the car. The driver received non-life-threatening injuries and was flown to hospital for prompt treatment.
