Jumps, flips, turns, dancing and high speed skating were all on display at the recently-concluded 48th national artistic roller skating championship at Vishakapatnam.

Skaters from Maharastra excelled at the event picking up seven medals at the games, including two gold medals. Queen Mary School student Gitka Daswani and Walsingham School student Reeva Sakaria were the proud winners of gold in the free dancing skating and artistic categories respectively.

Fourteen-year old Gitka Daswani was ecstatic after clinching her first gold medal at the Nationals. “I couldn’t believe when the marks came out as the margin was very small between all the skaters. I finally had a lead of 2.0 in the end so it was a very nice feeling,” she said of her gold in free dance skating. In figure skating, her main event, she won a bronze.

On why she chose to take up roller skating, “It started as a hobby and is my passion now. I have been skating for nine years now. Plus in free style I get to choose peppy Bollywood or Hollywood songs, they are peppy numbers and have good choreography.”

All this does not come easy though, as Gitka puts in two hours of training with her coaches Smita Sheth and Jaspal Khurana while balancing her school work side by side.

The young star is very focused though as when asked on her goal, her answer was prompt, “My aim is to compete in the Asian Games.”

The Mumbai team was represented by Gitka Daswani, Reeva Sakaria, Milloni Kapadia, Gauravi Shantaram, Drashta Shelewala, Yasha Patel, and Divyangana Sagar.

How Mumbai fared: 12-14 Girls: Free Dance Skating: Gitika Daswani (Gold), Artistic Skating: Reeva Sakaria (Gold), Milloni Kapadia (Silver), Figure Skating: Milloni Kapadia (Silver), Gitika Daswani (Bronze), 12-14 Boys: Figure Skating: Drashta Shelwal (Bronze), 10-12 Girls: Free Dance Skating: Gauravi Shantaram (Silver)
