HYDERABAD: Ahead of the proposed surgery, liver surgeon Ravindranath said there was ''no need to transplant  the liver” of Bharatiya Janata Party General Secretary Pramod Mahajan, battling for life at Hinduja hospital at Mumbai, after he was shot at by his younger brother Pravin Mahajan.

Liver transplant surgeon and Global Hospital Director Dr Ravindranath, who returned here on Sunday after visiting the patient, said  Mahajan could survive with the damaged liver.

Dr Ravindranath said, ''Mahajan will survive with the damaged liver, which has the capacity to grow. There is no need for a liver transplantation."

Corroborating reports that Mahajan's health condition was critical, he said Mahajan had received critical injuries to his liver, lower chest, abdomen and pancreas.

Dr Mohd Rela, a liver transplant expert from Kings College London, is currently in Mumbai at the behest of the Mahajan family.

Reports suggest that a liver surgery will be performed on Mahajan to remove the body packs to arrest the bleeding of the liver. One of the lobes of the liver was shattered by a bullet.
