A notorious criminal managed to escape from the Tamil Nadu police custody by loosening his handcuffs and beating the two cops, who were escorting him, at Dadar railway terminus on Tuesday night.

Narrating the incident, sub inspector Sheikh Abdul Rehman, attached to Nagapattanam district police, said “The notorious criminal Anandharasu Chinappa, 25, who was on LOC (Look Out Cell) for the past couple years, was nabbed by Immigration officers at Chhatrapati Shivaji international airport on April 10.”

The Immigration officers informed Nagapattanam police. “On receiving the information, the Nagapattanam police sent a two-member police team — sub inspector Sheikh Rehman and head constable Aramugham to Mumbai to take the custody of Anandharasu.

“At around 7.30pm, Anandharasu requested us to loosen his handcuffs as he wanted to use the toilet. As soon as we loosened his handcuffs, he hit us and managed to jump on the tracks and escaped in darkness,” said sub inspector Rehman. He added that they went to Dadar railway police station to lodge a complaint.

Confirming it, senior police inspector Shivaji Shinde of Dadar railway police station said, “ We have registered a case under sections 224 (Resistance or obstacle by a person to his lawful apprehension) and 332 (Voluntarily causing hurt to deter public servant from his duty) of the IPC. Her added that a manhunt had been launched to nab him.

Correction, April 15, 2011: The policemen who lost the prisoner were from Tamil Nadu, not Mumbai. The error in the headline has been rectified.
