The distribution arm of the state electricity board has detected 12,570 cases of power theft in the state in less than a month. According to MSEDCL officials, they found out that the power theft amounted to about Rs6.11 crore.

A total of 1.48 lakh consumers were checked during the drive which was started from June 15. Ajoy Mehta, managing director, MSEDCL, said FIRs had been registered against 117 persons. The highest number of power thefts was found in Nasik zone with the number of cases going up to 4,761 and the theft amounting to Rs1.21 crore.

While Pune recorded 293 consumers stealing electricity with an assessed amount of Rs1.65 crore, 626 power thieves were found in Bhandup zone with an assessed damage amounting to Rs90 lakh.
